The origin of the name Hungerford is English and the Coat of Arms contains Black with two silver bars and at the top three white circles. The Crest is A wheatsheaf emerging from a crown. The family motto is Et Dieu mon appui.

Spelling variations include: Hungerford, Hungerton, Huningford and others.

First found in Somerset where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Joan and Sarah Hungerford settled in Virginia in 1650; John Hungerton settled in Virginia in 1648; Thomas Hungerford settled in New London Conn in 1633
