The origin of the name Herbert is English and the Coat of Arms contains Blue and red with three silver lions. The Crest is A bundle of seven arrows. The family motto is Constantia et Fortitudine.
Spelling variations include: Herbert, Herbit, Herbutt and others.
First found in Suffolk where they were seated from very early times and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D.
Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Elizabeth Herbert settled in the Barbados in 1671; John Herbert settled in Salem Mass. in 1630; Thomas Herbert settled in Virginia in 1651; William Herbert and his wife Elizabeth settled in the Barbados in 1679.


The origin of the name Herbert is French and the Coat of Arms contains A silver shield with three red bars, and over all, a red bend on which there are three bezants.

First found in Normandy, where Herbert families were the Lords (seigneurs) of Plaigniere and of Beauvoir.
Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: the aforementioned Louis Hbert, who came to Canada in 1604 and is generally considered to have been the first permanent settler in Canada. He married Marie Rolet in Paris in 1602.
